English learning——The reliability of routine anthropometric data collected by health workers: A cross-sectional study

There are extensive resources in recording anthropometry, and a lot of work has been done, but the results’ reliability is still unknown. In addition, reliable data on child growth is prerequisite for monitoring and improving child health. If the measurements are unreliable growth may be misreported, and health problems may go undetected. So the researchers chose this blank area as their subject.

Firstly, health workers followed training in basic anthropometry measurement and then carried out a test-retest study using infants aged 0-2years. 192 health workers were included, finally 70 health workers returned complete data. Health workers recorded two recordings of weight, length, head circumference, and abdominal circumferences on five infants. And a peer health worker recorded a third set of measurements on each infant. 22 individuals were selected to be observed by an external administer during data collection. Then intra-observer and inter-observer reliability was assessed by technical error of measurements(TEMs). They also assessed whether external observation influences reliability. At the end, they found that none of the TEMs were excessively large, and drew the conclusion that following training in anthropometry, health workers in Bradford can general reliably measure child growth.
