The Department of Oral Histology and Pathology comprises 3 professor, 1 associate professor and 2 lectures. The main work consists of two parts: pathology diagnosis and research work.
Pathology diagnosis:
We make about 3,000 oral pathology diagnosis every year. The diagnosis quantity and quality is top-grade all over China. Our work includes: traditional biopsy and pathology diagnosis, quick frozen biopsy, cytological examination and intractable pathology case consultation. Research work:
“Tissue Engineering center” was established in 2000. It is a internationally well-known regenerative medicine research center. Our research work is focused on regenerative medicine.
1．Main research fields
(1) Maxillofacial development biology, it includes: novel cleft palate related genes; teeth shape patterning genes; teeth root hypoplasia related genes; molecular mechanism of dental root developmental patterning, etc.
(2) Multipotent stem cells (especially ectomesenchymal stem cell) research. it includes: to establish stem cell lines, cell immortalization, target differentiation, trans-differentiation and application in regenerative medicine.
(3) Tissue regeneration and repair. It includes: mechanism of regeneration and repair of bone, teeth, skin, peripheral nerve and etc; research and application of tissue engineering products. In addition, we are in charge of the national tissue and organ engineering research project of “863 plan” and undertaking technology transforming project.
(4) Biology and pathology of oral oncology. It includes: mechanism of oral oncology occurrence; precancerous lesion and early period diagnosis of oral tumor; gene therapy of oral tumor.
2. Communication and cooperation with other universities
A long time and fruitful cooperation relationship has been established with Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the University of Hong Kong, Osaka dental university, and the University of Southern California.

Yan JIN, DDS., Ph.D.
Born in April of 1963, graduated from the School of Stomatology, the Fourth Military Medical University in 1985 and awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1991. The chair professor and director of Department of Oral Histology and Pathology of the School of Stomatology, and the director of the Center of Tissue Engineering, the Fourth Military Medical University. He was invited to be the visiting professor of Osaka Dental University. He is the Council member of Chinese Stomatology Association (CSA), Vice chairman of Oral Pathology Committee, Chinese Stomatology Association (CSA), standing committee member of Chinese Tissue Engineering Association, member of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society and the member of International Association of Dental Research. He was offered the position of “Cheung Kong Scholar” Professorship and was awarded National outstanding young investigator grant of National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Studied on development and regeneration of tooth, skin, peripheral nerve, cornea. Prof. JIN continued in-depth researches on mesenchymal stem cells related to tooth and skin development and regeneration. He carried out researches on the multipotent stem cells focusing on target inductive differentiation, trans-differentiation and application in tissue regeneration. His research group has successfully produced tissue engineering skin, peripheral nerve, corneal and periodontal tissues. In charge of the national “863 plan” project titled “Tissue engineering skin of the Tissue and Organ Engineering Research Project”. These achievements have been described in high quality research articles published in well-known international journals such as J Biol Chem, Biol Cell, Tissue Engineering and so on. He is the author of over 600 publications and 12 patents. The total number of published articles written in English has reached 80, and the accumulative impact factor is above 150. He is the editor of 12 books.
