Clinical investigation of ultrasonic diagnosis in Xijing Hospital began in 1959. In 1980s, color Doppler ultrasound diagnosis was launched, and the Department of Ultrasound Department was established, which was one of the earliest established Ultrasond Departments in China. It was approved as a master's degree authorizing discipline in 1987, and doctor degree authorizing discipline in 1996. The Sino-US ultrasound research and education center was jointly set up with Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphi of United States in 2000. It was officially authorized as Medical Imaging Center of PLA by the General Logistics Department of PLA in 2001, and was approved as national key (cultivating) discipline in 2007. The Department is now as the chairperson Department in the Ultrasound Society of Shaanxi Province, and vice-chairperson Department in the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.

There are 32 middle-level and high-end color ultrasound devices in the Department, including transesophageal echocardiography, vascular cavity ultrasound instrument and dynamic three-dimensional ultrasound. It also has High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), microwave, RF, and other treatment system. The Department is on a solid medical and scientific establishment.

There are 41 medical staffs with proper composition professionally and technically, including personnel in science, engineering, medicine, research and laboratory. There are five professors and four associate professors, in whom three are Ph.D. supervisors. 80% of lecturers and above have doctor degree. 90% senior doctors have experience of being abroad over one year for study.

Multiple new techniques and procedures have been developed and applied in clinical practice, such as ultrasonic contrast, ultrasound-guided biopsy, hepatobiliary intubation and drainage, varies abscess (sac) drainage, installation of filters and wearing ring with ultrasound guiding, ultrasound-guided puncture in various cyst (liver, kidney cyst), HIFU, RF, microwave treatment of liver cancer, uterine fibroids, and other solid tumor. A significant shift from medical diagnosis to clinical treatment of ultrasound has achieved.

The Department is characteristic specially in echocardiography monitoring on invasive closure of cardiac defect, cardiac synchronization treatment, and interventional ultrasound diagnosis and treatment.
