The Department of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery of Xijing hospital，Fourth Military Medical University, founded in 1952, is one of specialized technical centers of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery of P.L.A. It was authorized as training department for candidates of Master degree in 1986 and candidates of Doctor degree in 1993. It was also authorized as one of the national post-doctorate working stations in 1994.
The Department has a strong team of experts and famous scholars. Professor Si-chang Jiang (Academician of CEA), Professor Ru-cheng Chi, Professor Qian-chu Liu, Professor Jing-lin Wang, Professor Wei-guo Huang were previous chief. Professor Jian-hua Qiu, current chief, is a supervisor of M.D.& Ph. D canditates. At the moment, there are 4 professors and 5 associate professors, including Standing Committee member of ENT department of China Medical Association, Standing Committee member of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, chairman of Shannxi Association of Otolaryngology, chairman of Hearing and SpeechRehabilitation Department of Shannxi Association of Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons, vice-chairman of Association of Otolaryngology in PLA, vice-chairman of Laryngectomees Association of China Disabled Persons Federation, vice-chairman of Shannxi Head and Neck Oncologic Society. Among all the doctors in military service, more than 87% staffs have Doctor's degree.
The Department has its distinguished characteristics and prominent advantages on disease treatment with more than 70,000 out-patients and more than 3,000 in-patients every year. The total construction area of the Department is about 4,500 square meters, including in-patient part(83 beds), the clinic, operation room, laboratory, teaching and research section. There are center of sleep disorders research, center of clinical anatomy training, center of molecular diagnosis of deafness, center of cochlear implant. The in-patient part is divided into two wards with specialized teams of otology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck surgery respectively. The Department is equipped with advanced medical instruments and technologies, such as nasal endoscope, otic endoscope and laryngeal endoscope as well as imaging navigation system, NIM-Response (Nerve Integrity Monitor, Medtronic Xomed), various Laser equipment, low temperature-controlled plasma radio-frequency system, ultrasonic scalpel. Minimally invasive technique is well developed in all fields of otolaryngoly head and neck surgery, including anterior skull base, lateral skull base, rhino-orbital and rhino-basicranial surgery. The Department has maintained its leading position as one of the top-ranked teams in China.
The Department has places great effort upon basic and continued medical education and training. Four well-known professors were hired as guest professor. The post-graduate training program has trained more than 100 candidates for Master Degree and Doctor Degree till now. Every year nearly 3 candidates for Doctor Degree and 4 candidates for Master Degree are trained. Training program on job has also provides advanced training to over 800 visiting residents.
The Department has always attached great importance to both basic scientific research and clinical research. 18 research projects are funded by the NSCF (National Natural Science Foundation of China).There are 3 military cooperation key projects, 2 sub-projects of key projects in science and technology of national “Tenth Five-year Plan”, 3 international cooperation projects and many provincial funds. The projects of the Department have received one National Science and Technology Progress Award (third prizes), one Military Science and Technology Progress Award (First prize), 12 ministry level or provincial Natural Science Awards (second prize). Over 100 research papers published in major Chinese or foreign medical journals within recent years.
