Department of Anesthesiology

Department of Anesthesiology of Xijing Hospital was established in 1953. With the hard work of several generations, it has developed into a specialty consists of three sub-specialties: clinical anesthesia, intensive care medicine and pain medicine. Now it has a crew of 120 staffs. It provides programs for fellows including postgraduates, PhDs and post-doctors. It is the provincial key discipline of Anesthesiology, military center of clinical anesthesia, and the national professional center of clinical research on GCP as well.

The chairman, professor Li-ze Xiong, is also the vice-president of Xijing Hospital. He is awarded by the “Chang Jiang Scholars Program”. Being a PhD candidate supervisor, his researches are funded by various funds including the Projects of International Cooperation and Exchanges NSFC and National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar. In 2006, he was elected as the vice-president of Asian and Australian Regional Section, the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists(WFSA). Further, in 2008 he was elected as the member of executive committee of WFSA and was the first involved in leadership of WFSA from China.

The Department has 69 operating rooms, a SICU with 6 beds, two PACUs with 18 beds and a pain clinic with 6 beds. The devices value is over 30 million Yuan. The Department is characterized with its expertise in the anesthetic management of cardiosurgery and multi-organ transplantation, perioperative management of brain and spinal cord function, pre-hospital and in-hospital care of multiple injuries. 22814 cases were done in 2007. In 2006 the Department has successfully executed anesthesia for facial composite tissue allotransplantation. It’s the first case in China and second case in the world. In 2008 we completed anesthesia for the first case of heart-liver-kidney transplantation in China and then for the first case of heart-lung transplantation in north-western China. The SICU is experienced in management of severe multiple injuries, severe pancreatitis and ARDS. The pain clinic is experienced in management of neuropathic pain such as trigeminal neuralgia. Using high frequency and heating coagulation therapy, we had treated over 500 cases of trigeminal neuralgia.

The researches focus on brain and spinal cord protection, mechanism of pain and military translational medicine. The research projects are funded by 21 funds including the NSFC for Distinguished Young Scholar and NSFC funds. There are 11 projects supported by provincial or ministerial funds as well. The research projects have received the National Science and Technology Rewards and several provincial or ministerial rewards. 5 patents were achieved and 109 papers were published, of which 19 were indexed by SCI. The laboratory now has a area of 500m2

The Department is in charge of teaching and training of anesthesiology in the University. 78 postgraduates including 10 PhD candidates have been involved in the training program, 32 had completed their training and graduated. Fellows trained in clinic reaches 30 each year. Professor Li-ze Xiong first introduced the standard “primary trauma care (PTC) training” to China. The residency training program in the Department is committed to training physicians to become outstanding anesthesiologists and has involved over 50 residents. The Department has established professional collaborations with institutes in US, UK, Japan, Germany and Singapore. 12 doctors in the Department were provided communication and exchange opportunities.
