Established in 1955 by Professor Wang Liangneng who was famous as one of the medical experts, the medical educationalists, and the founders of Burn and Plastic Surgery in China, Department of Burns and Cutaneous Surgery of Xijing Hospital is one of the earliest founded Burn and Plastic Surgery units in China. The Department was approved as Burn and Plastic Surgery Center of PLA in 1987, and listed in the first series of national doctoral degree authorizing disciplines in the same year. To meet the need of disciplinary development, the Department of Burn and Plastic Surgery was divided into Department of Burn Surgery and Department of Plastic Surgery in 1990. Department of Burn Surgery has been listed as a component discipline of postdoctoral research station in medicine since 1995, a major department of surgery of National “211” Project and Military “2110” Project since 2001. It was also approved as Burns Centre of PLA in 2006, while formally renamed as Department of Burns and Cutaneous Surgery in the same year for the constant enlargement of clinical diagnosis and treatment range.
In 1960, for the first time in the world, The Department successfully rescued a severely burned patient with 92% TBSA burns including approximately 68% TBSA of full thickness burn and accompanied by severe complication of postburn septicemia, making outstanding contribution to the development of Burn Surgery. From then on, the Department has been insisting on wound management and tissue repair for the patients suffered from burn or trauma as main direction, and applied the plastic methods and principles into all aspects of burn or trauma treatment. As a result, the Department has reduced the incidence rates of deformity significantly, reconstructed the function and appearance for patients to the maximum of availability,and gradually formed a set of systemic treatment features and advantages from the early treatment to the late plastic operation and the aesthetic rehabilitation. The treatment level of the Department has always been advanced at home and abroad, especially, in the application of microsurgical free flaps into complicated traumatic skin injury, minimally invasive techniques into skin wounds, scar and cosmetic surgery, which further improved survival rate of critical patients, reduced the incidence rate of residual deformity and obtained ideal functional and aesthetic result.
Department of Burns and Cutaneous Surgery is composed of Hospitalization Rooms including 2 wards with 80 beds, ICU with 10 beds, Wound Treatment Centre, Scar Aesthetic Treatment Unit, Burn Rehabilitation Treatment Centre, Special Operating Rooms, and Wound Repair and Tissue Regeneration Laboratory. The Department’s staffs include: 3 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 senior rehabilitation engineer, 8 surgeons in charge and/or lecuturers, and more than 90 outstanding middle-aged and young doctors, nurses and technicians. Through the years, the Department has built up a set of complete, high-quality, scientific and precise treatment procedures as well as diagnosis and treatment standards. The scope of the Department in medical practice includes burns, scars, acute skin trauma and chronic skin wound induced by all causes in cutaneous surgery area, surgical treatment for skin neoplasm, repair of baldness, and cosmetic surgery.
In the last 50 years, the Department has been insisting on clinical practice in combination with fundamental research, and obtained a series of results of breakthrough in research work. There are over 60 scientific research projects supported by the grants from National Natural Science Foundation and Military Dictating Subject Program, and the research results have won more than 20 national and provincial awards, and obtained several national patents, including Gold Prize for National 10 Years Medical Achievements, Military Great Medical Achievement Award during “National Ninth Five Years Plan”, First Prize for Military Medical Achievement, First Prize for State Science and Technology Progress Awards (shared with others), Second Prize for State Science and Technology Progress Awards.
As the biggest clinic, scientific research and teaching base of the same professional field in Northwest China, Department of Burns and Cutaneous Surgery of Xijing Hospital has been reputed in Northwest China and also famous at home and abroad because of its consummate treatment technique, unitive staffs team of first-class talents, solid scientific research strength, well-equipped instruments and the spirit of serving the patients wholeheartedly.
