Established in 1955, the department of Ophthalmology was the leadship of Prof.Zhang Fuxing, Prof. Cai Yongshu, Prof. Liu Yezi and Prof.Hui Yannian in succession. At present, department head is Prof. and chief physician Wang Yusheng. It became a Master degree subject authorized by the nation in 1981, ophthalmology research center of PLA in 1989; the first authorized Doctor degree subject in 1993, which was also unique in Northwest of China at that time; a composition subject of post-doctoral research station in 1994 and the unique eye institute of PLA in 2000. It is a speciallized ophthalmology department which holds clinical, educational and research work together, and famous at home and abroad. Now in China, it is the only member unit of Expert Institue of Internationl Ocular Fundus Diseases(Club Gonin), one member unit of Ophthalmology Branch, and its Fundus Diseases group and Visual Optics group of Chinese Medical Associaition, and chairman unit of Ophthalmology Branch of Shaanxi Medical Association as well.
At present, the department owns 101 beds in the wards and has more than 80,000 person-time in out-patient clinic every year. It can accommodate more than 2,000 person-time hospitalization. The staff is composed of doctors, nurses and technicians, altogether 103 persons, among whom, 19 are main series doctors, 11 have senior title, 3 have been engaged in postdoctoral research ,12 have doctor degree, 2 have master degree and 7 have the experience of researching abroad for a long time. So far, it has formed an academic echelon composed by professors, associate professors and young capable members. With thick academic environment, it has sponsored national, provincial and military continuing education courses and academic conferences for more than ten times. It is prominent in cultivating talents, and up to now, 1 post-doctor, 36 doctors and 127 masters have graduated from the department. More than ten oculists for advanced professional training are cultivated every year.
The department is oriented towards "highlighting the characteristic of medical care and academy, developing medicine, education and research comprehensively". In clinical work, we strive for maintaining proper medical treatment scale and stress our medical feature. Besides, we possess many first-class devices to provide service, such as: vitrectomy-phacoemulsification integrator, multiple ocular laser devices, fundus angiography imaging system, excimer laser refractive surgical instrument and wavefront aberration analyzer, ocular ultrasonoscope and optical coherence tomography device and so on. The aggregate-value of medical treatment facility is more than 16,000,000 yuan. We have formed our specialty in rescue treatment of complicated ocular trauma and vitreous microsurgery, diagnosis and treatment of fundus diseases, excimer laser refractive surgery and diopter correction, phacoemulsification of cataract and IOL implantation, diagnosis and treatment of various glaucoma, ocular plastic and cosmetic surgery, ocular tumor and orbital surgery and keratoplasty, et al. We have made the feature and predominance of scientific research in proliferation and regulation of intraocular cells, experimental and clinical research of ocular trauma, prevention and cure of intraocular neovascula- rization, etiology, prevention and cure research of cataract, mechanism of graft rejection in keratoplasty and corneal engineering. Furthermore, our department have undertook teaching task of multiple layers of students.
In last several years, our department have accomplished more than 30 items of national, provincial and military scientific research foundation, among which national natural science foundation of China has provided financial assistance for more than 20 items and scientific research funds amounts to multimilions. Moreover, we have gained more than 10 items of national, provincial and military science and technology progress awards. Besides, we have been as chief editor and published many monographs, such as the fifth and sixth edition of "Textbook of Ophthalmology" for national medical colleges and universities, "choroidal neovascularization""Minimum surgery of retinal detachment (Ⅰ,Ⅱ)" and “Ocular cosmetology". These books promote clinical guidance and academic work actively. In recent years, more than 500 articles have been published in international and domestic kernel periodicals., and more than 20 papers of SCI adoption among them. We have established close academical connection with many worldwide famous ophthalmological centers in Germany, USA, British, Japan and so on, and have invited many international famous experts to be visiting professors in our university.
