  Air Force Medical University (AFMU) launched its graduate programs in 1962 and 31 graduate students were trained between 1962 and 1965. After the restoration of China’s graduate education in 1978 following a 13-year break, the university restarted its graduate programs. It became one of the first batch of national universities authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees in 1981.   Continuing Education Department is under the Office of Academic Affairs and mainly responsible for Military Post Education, Military Professional Education, Remote Education, Adult Education and Foreign Exchange and Training. Continuing education Department was formerly the continuing education division established in 1999. It was renamed office of correspondence instruction in 2004. It was renamed the distance and continuing education department in 2012. In 2017, it was transferred into Office of Academic Affairs according to the new staffing system.
